WhatsApp rolls out new features, including voice note status

On Tuesday, 7th of February 2023, the Instant Messaging (IM) platform, WhatsApp, announced a new feature; the voice note status. The feature allows users to record and share 30-second voice messages on their statuses.

WhatsApp users who prefer speaking to typing can now share more intimate updates via the new “voice status” update, according to the Meta-owned firm. When a user taps the microphone icon on the status screen, they are given the option to record voice messages shareable via their status.

According to the IM giant, this update lends a more personal touch to status updates and serves as a practical substitute for users who don’t like to type or utilize visuals.

Speaking on the reasons for the update, the firm quoted an average of 7 billion audio messages sent on the platform every day and decided to lean into this with the update, stating that many people were more at ease speaking than typing, as evidenced by the numbers.

In other updates, WhatsApp has made status profile rings available to all users after a slow roll-out process.

Now, when your contact posts a status update, these rings display around their profile picture, similar to how it works on its sister platform, Instagram. The chat lists, participant lists for groups, and contact information will all display status profile rings.

On WhatsApp status updates, users will now see link previews. This enables them to see the content of a link before clicking, to help them decide if it interests them or not.
