WATCH: Gymnast sets world record for crazy flip between bars

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Fans of the Olympics are wowed by the impressive athletic feats gymnasts bring to the competition floor every four years.

But one British gymnast is showing the world their time in the gym isn't always spent just training for the world stage. Sometimes, it's just for fun, and to do something no one in the world has ever done before.

Ashley Watson is an elite gymnast, known especially for his accomplishments on parallel bars and horizontal bar. He's a British and European champion, and as of last week, he's a Guinness World Record holder.

Watson set the record for the farthest back flip between horizontal bars. He posted a video to his Instagram account showing the world record feat. He swung around the bar before launching himself into the air, flipping and catching another bar 5.87 meters away.

The video has been viewed more than 88,000 times on Instagram, and it's gotten more than 14,000 likes.

After the huge response from the gymnastics community and others, Watson had to let it be known there were plenty of failures in the process of making the video.

"Sometimes the squirrel does miss the tree," he wrote on a post showing bloopers of his world record attempts.
