The One Thing That Could’ve Stopped David Harbour from Joining Stranger Things, MCU – Exclusive
David Harbour is a highly skilled American actor who rose to prominence through his portrayal of Chief Jim Hopper in the acclaimed series Stranger Things. His adaptability as an actor has led to critical acclaim, and he has graced both the big and small screens, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.
In the 2021 Marvel movie Black Widow, David Harbour assumed the character of Alexei Shostakov, alias the Red Guardian. As a Soviet-era superhero and Natasha Romanoff’s former husband, he injected the film with both depth and humor. His performance skillfully blended nostalgia with comedic elements, enriching the overall cinematic experience.
David Harbour Might’ve Never Been An Actor
In David Harbour’s latest film, Gran Turismo, the narrative draws inspiration from the real-life journey of Jann Mardenborough, the gamer who transitioned into a professional racer. The new film boldly declares itself as a narrative rooted in an impossible dream, a substantial assertion that it successfully upholds. We’re introduced to Jann, portrayed by Archie Madekwe, as he competes in the virtual realm from the confines of his bedroom, investing his earnings from a part-time job into high-end steering peripherals to elevate his performance on the virtual racetrack.
During an exclusive interview with Fandomwire, David Harbour was inquired about whether his career path draws any resemblance to that of the film’s lead. David Harbour expressed that he can relate to the sentiment, emphasizing that he himself faced a similar situation. He acknowledged that pursuing a career in acting isn’t typically a choice that parents enthusiastically embrace.
Harbour told Fandomwire:
“Yeah, very much, so I mean I was in the same position. It’s not something acting as a profession is not something that I think parents jump for joy that their child is going to go into, especially ones that you know my parents had no even understanding of it. They were business people in Westchester, they had no friends who were professional actors, and we knew nobody who did that profession. So I think they were very skeptical and wanted me to just get a job where I could pay my rent and you know be happy.”
In Gran Turismo, David Harbour portrays Jack Salter, a rugged and unsuccessful racer, drafted by Danny Moore to oversee operations at the GT Academy. Remarkably, Jack Salter is merely a product of fiction, a character brought to life for the storyline.
David Harbour Lost A Role In Hugh Jackman’s Film
Harbour recounted an encounter where he crossed paths with a casting director involved in the production of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This casting director was actively seeking robust actors for a specific role, and to David’s surprise, she proposed that he consider taking on the part of Blob. Eager for employment, David engaged in the conversation, only to be taken aback by the unexpected description of the Blob character.
Harbour told The Wrap:
“I was like, ‘Great, I need to work, what have you got?’ She’s like ‘THE BLOB!’ She was like, ‘Yeah, it’s like an X-Men, he’s like big, fat and controls gravity,’ and I was like ‘Okay, wow, that’s flattering.’ And she was like, ‘No, no, it’s not that you’re fat, it’s just that we need a big guy to wear the suit.'”
He had a sit-down meeting with the creators to delve deeper into the character’s nuances. During this conversation, he made a humorous remark that ultimately caught the attention of director Gavin Hood, who, rather unexpectedly, declined his offer.
Gran Turismo is available for rent or purchase on Google Play.
