The Legend of Heroes Trails Series: Crossbell, Reverie, Nayuta Games Coming West

Four The Legend of Heroes Trails games that have yet to be localized in the West were found to be listed on Epic Games Store on PC. (Thanks, RPG Site).

The four games are:

Note that no announcement from NIS America was shared yet, so you could say the announcements of all four games were leaked by Epic Games Store.

The Legend of Heroes Trails / Kiseki series explained

Developed by Nihon Falcom, the Trails series, known as the Kiseki series in Japan, is the best series you can get into if you love world building, a plethora of well-written playable characters, deep NPCs who each have their own stories, and overarching arcs. It’s pretty much the best ongoing JRPG series out there in terms of “lore” like the cool kids say.

While the games of the Legend of Heroes Trails series are divided into several arcs with different protagonists, they all form one coherent, connected story. Set in various locations of the continent of Zemuria, the arcs so far are:

  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC (Sora no Kiseki FC in Japan)
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC (Sora no Kiseki SC)
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd (Sora no Kiseki the 3rd)

This is the first arc of the series, called the Liberl arc.

  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero (Zero no Kiseki)
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure (Ao no Kiseki)

This is the second arc, called the Crossbell arc.

  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel I (Sen no Kiseki)
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II (Sen no Kiseki II)
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III (Sen no Kiseki III)
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV (Sen no Kiseki IV The End of Saga) (Spoilercast)

This is the third arc, called the Erebonia arc.

Next, you have three other games:

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails (Nayuta no Kiseki) which is seemingly unconnected to the rest of the Trails series.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie (Hajimari no Kiseki), first released in August 2020 in Japan, and the sequel to Cold Steel 4, with three different routes and protagonists. Trails into Reverie features Lloyd from the Crossbell games, Rean from the Erebonia games, and a mysterious third protagonist named C.

Lastly, there’s The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki. The sequel to Trails into Reverie and the beginning of the new Calvard arc. The game is releasing on September 30, 2021 in Japan.

Why fans are so hyped about the releases of Zero and Azure?

What’s important to note here is that the Crossbell games, Zero and Ao, respectively first released on September 2010 and 2011 in Japan, were never officially localized in the west until now.

The Crossbell games were only fan translated, most notably by The Geofront team these past years. The Crossbell games are very important to play if you wish to fully understand the story of Trails of Cold Steel 3, 4. And they’re absolutely primordial to understand Trails into Reverie (Hajimari). I was very worried, thinking Hajimari, or even Kuro could possibly get localized before Zero and Ao, throwing the western fandom into further chaos. I’m very happy to see the worst case scenario was avoided.

In Japan, Zero and Azure were also released on PS Vita with full voice acting, under the names Zero no Kiseki Evolution and Ao no Kiseki Evolution. These games were ported to PS4 in 2019 in Japan, with the suffix Kai. When this happened, Falcom President Toshihiro Kondo teased the games would be coming west.

Even before that, when Zero no Kiseki: Kai and Ao no Kiseki: Kai on PS4 were teased but not officially announced yet, I asked Kondo about western releases and he teased they were coming. You can read the full interview here. The Crossbell games are finally coming.

Last but not least, it’s also important to keep in mind these are PC release dates which were leaked. The games should be released earlier on consoles: PS4 and Switch. We’ll know for sure at the New Game Plus Expo Falcom JDK Band concert in a few hours, as this is when NIS America should officially announce all four games.
