Sinkhole causes 1.5M gallons of wastewater to spill in Ocala park
OCALA, Fla. — A large sinkhole opened Saturday at a water-holding pond in Ocala.
The sinkhole at the Ground Wetland Recharge Park site drained about 1.5 million gallons of treated wastewater, Ocala.com reported.
Ocala-News.com reported the spill has since been contained. City officials told the news outlet the water involved has been treated and presents no danger to the public.
The spill was caused when a sinkhole formed in a wetland cell.
The latest sinkhole postpones the opening of the $6 million Ground Wetland Recharge Park, which was supposed to open this fall, according to the news outlets. The park is now expected to open in late fall or early winter, according to Ocala Water Resources Department Conservation Coordinator Rachel Slocumb.
Ocala.com reported it was the second major sinkhole to open in as many months at one of the three ponds at 2201 NW 21st St.
The first large sinkhole opened on June 20, Ocala.com reported.
