Samsung Galaxy S22 and Samsung S22 Ultra design and build

Samsung has unveiled a new look for the Galaxy S22 series, which is shared by both the S22 and S22+ models.

The S22, in comparison to last year, 2022, is quite “minimalistic” and “flatter.” While the S22 is flatter than the S21, it is still rounded and curvy in a few key areas.

The Galaxy S22 series features an Infinity-O display with a circular cutout in the top center for the front selfie camera, similar to previous S series phones. Unlike the S21 series, which used plastic on the smaller S21, all three models employ Gorilla Glass Victus+ for the back panel. The S22 and S22+ have a metallic surround around the back camera array, while the S22 Ultra has a separate lens protrusion for each camera element.

Hardware

There are three models in the S22 range, each with different hardware characteristics. All models outside these territories use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 except for select African and European countries that use the Exynos 2200.

Display

Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels with HDR10+ compatibility and “dynamic tone mapping” technology are featured in the S22 series. A second-generation ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint sensor is used in all versions.

Storage

The S22 and S22+ include 8GB of RAM and internal storage options of 128GB and 256GB. The S22 Ultra comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage and a 12GB variant with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB of internal storage.

The S22 Ultra, unlike the S21 Ultra, does not have a model with 16GB RAM. There is no microSD card slot on any of the three variants.

Battery

Non-removable 3,700 mAh, 4,500 mAh, and 5000 mAh Li-Po batteries are found in the S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra. The S22 supports up to 25W wired charging over USB-C (using USB Power Delivery), whereas the S22+ and S22 Ultra offer 45W charging.

According to tests, there is no discernible difference between the 45W and 25W charging speeds. Qi inductive charging up to 15W is available on all three.

The phones can also charge other Qi-compatible devices at up to 4.5W using the S22’s battery power, dubbed Wireless PowerShare.

Connectivity

5G SA/NSA networks are supported by all three phones. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 are available on the Galaxy S22, while Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 are available on the Galaxy S22+ and S22 Ultra. Ultra-Wideband (UWB), which is comparable to NFC, is also supported by the S22+ and S22 Ultra versions (not to be confused with 5G mmWave, which is marketed as Ultra-Wideband by Verizon).

Samsung’s new “SmartThings Find” feature and the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag+ both use this technology.

Camera

A 50MP wide sensor, a 10MP telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultrawide sensor are included in the S22 and S22+.

The 108MP sensor from the S22 Ultra’s predecessor is retained with 12-bit HDR. It also contains a 12MP ultrawide sensor and two 10MP telephoto sensors with 3x and 10x optical zoom. The S22 and S22+ include a 10MP front-facing camera, whereas the S22 Ultra has a 40MP sensor.

The Galaxy S22 series supports HEIF and can capture HDR10+ video.

Software

The Samsung Galaxy S22 phones came with Android 12 (One UI 4.1) and Samsung’s One UI software. Samsung Knox is incorporated for greater device security, and a separate version for enterprise use is also available.

Samsung S22 and S22 Ultra prices

The phones are still relatively new in the market, as they were released in February this year. They are in high demand making the phones very expensive. The phones can be purchased in retail shops like computer village, Slot, and online stores like Jumia and Konga, starting from N550,000 to N770,000, depending on the particular phone’s memory size. The Samsung S22 Ultra is more expensive than the Samsung S22.
