Road conditions worsen across southern Indiana overnight

The Bartholomew Co. sheriff urged drivers to stay off the roads Monday night due to deteriorating conditions.

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. — At least four crashes have closed interstates in southern Indiana as temperatures dropped Monday night. 

A serious crash closed part of Interstate 65 northbound in Bartholomew County before 10 p.m. as road conditions reportedly deteriorate in the area.

According to the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office, northbound traffic was restricted to one lane around 10 p.m. at the 60-mile marker, south of Columbus. According to the sheriff, a semi and several other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Lane Restriction I65 northbound at the 60 mile marker is down to 1 lane at this time. Significant accident involving a semi and several other vehicle.

In a separate Facebook post minutes later, the sheriff urged residents to "please avoid travel overnight if possible."

Patrol deputies are advising that roadway conditions have quickly deteriorated. Please avoid travel over night if possible.

Just before 1 a.m., a winter weather advisory was issued for Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Lawrence and Monroe counties until 8 a.m. Tuesday.

In Dearborn County in southeastern Indiana, all lanes of Interstate 74 westbound were closed east of Batesville shortly after 11 p.m. due to a crash involving a semi.

At around 1 a.m., troopers were investigating a jackknifed semi on I-65 around the weigh station in Jackson County.

1/31/23 1:00 am: Trp. Gary Thalls is investigating a jackknifed semi on I-65 Northbound near the 51 mile marker in Jackson County at the entrance to the Northbound Weigh Station that involved a trailer spilling its cargo.

And the northbound lanes of I-65 were closed near the 46-mile marker in Jackson County due to a crash involving semis. Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles reported multiple crashes due to slick and ice-covered roads. 

The roads are extremely slick and ice covered this evening. Multiple crashes have been reported over the last three hours.

Temperatures are dropping across central Indiana, with lows of 8 to 13 degrees expected overnight, along with wind chills in the range of 0 to 10 degrees early Tuesday.
