Need Something to Celebrate? It's National Condom Week!
Did you know that we're currently in the middle of National Condom Week? If not, no worries. It was a surprise to me too.
This morning, I read all of these little blips online about a week-long celebration of condoms and didn't pay them any mind until I stumbled on Planned Parenthood's official Facebook profile. Here's the story behind Condom Week in a note posted by Planned Parenthood:
*February 14th - 21st is National Condom Week! Originating at the University of California, Berkeley in the 70s, National Condom Week is a great time to focus on the importance of safe sex. With Valentine's Day serving as the kick-off for National Condom Week, we're reminded to love ourselves enough to prevent the spread of sexually-transmitted diseases and avoid unintended pregnancy.*I'm all for promoting safe sex. And how cool would it be to have some real fun with this? You could put a bunch of condoms in cellophane bags (tied with pretty ribbons, naturally) and pass them out as cheeky gifts to your pals. Or you could give your guy a greeting card with a sassy message, something along the lines of "Happy National Condom Week, hot stuff. Let's celebrate!"
It's rather interesting that in the midst of our celebration, an article about poorly fitting condoms should appear. According to this story on BBC, over 40% of men who participated in a study conducted at the University of Kentucky claimed they their most recent romps involved a condom that didn't fit properly. Further, the article says that men are more likely to remove condoms during intercourse if they feel uncomfortable. Also, a condom that doesn't fit well can tear; this has actually happened to me. Very unexpected and scary.
So then, how to find a condom that fits properly? The story suggests giving a few test drives. After your guy has one on, he should be able to tell from the get go if it's comfortable. If it isn't, try a different style or brand.
