Modern Warfare 2 Servers Taken Offline after Gamers Report Dangerous Malware Error
Bad news for gamers trying to play Modern Warfare 2. The servers have gone down temporarily after players reported encountering hacked lobbies in the multiplayer mode. And not just normal hacked lobbies, this is the kind of hacking that apparently was reported to be spreading a self-spreading worm virus to players.
But fear not, this is for the OG 2009 Modern Warfare 2 and not the most recent version. A post on the official Call of Duty updates
account read the following;“Multiplayer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) on Steam was brought offline while we investigate reports of an issue.”
And some fans were quick to point out the fact that no reference was made to what the ‘issue’ in question was. But this news comes little more than a month after players started reporting coming across a worm called Wacatac.B!ml in Modern Warfare 2 lobbies, so it would seem highly likely that the incidents are related.
What do we know about the Modern Warfare 2 servers?
Surprisingly the malware was first flagged last month by a user on a Steam forum stating that hackers ‘attack using hacked lobbies’, and that players should look at running an anti-virus. This all comes nearly a week after Microsoft fixed the online lobbies for the Xbox 360 version of the game.

There was a recent post on a Steam forum where a player stated that they had analysed the malware and had the following to say;
“I’m no expert, but the strings posted by that user sure look like a worm to me. One string that reads ‘User was randomly selected to be a spreader in modded lobbies’ “.
This gives the suggestion that anyone that comes across the virus runs the risk of becoming a vector for it in the future. But what we don’t know is what the endgame is for the hackers with this move. What’s clear though is that the hackers must have found a couple of bugs in the games, which they are able to exploit and this allows them to spread the malware through player’s computers.
This all comes nearly a week after Microsoft the online lobbies for the Xbox 360 version of the game.
Unfortunately for fans looking to get back on to the servers for the 2009 Modern Warfare 2, there is no indication when these will be back up and running. Since the post on Twitter on Wednesday 26 there has been radio silence but gamers will be hoping that
