Mel Zuckerman, the inspirational founder of Canyon Ranch and namesake of the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, passed away at home on March 18. 94.
Robert C. Robbins, University of Arizona president, said Mel Zuckerman believed in healthy living. We are so fortunate that he and Enid also believed that partnership with the university could expand that vision to our community and well beyond through public health education and programs designed to bring lifestyle-based disease prevention to the community."
The Zuckermans established a public health college with a $10 million endowment in 1997, inspired by Dr. James E. Dalen, former vice president of health sciences and dean of the University of Arizona College of Medicine. The Southwest's first nationally accredited public health college opened in 2000.
Zuckerman said that this college would be known all over the country for educating people about health and promoting it.
That vision was realized in 20 years.
The COVID-19 pandemic mobilized Zuckerman College of Public Health faculty, administrators, and students. Local and state government agencies used the college a lot for testing, tracking down contacts, epidemiologic and immunologic research, and promoting and giving out vaccines.
"This is a story about the power of philanthropy to create real, tangible impact on individuals, the community, and globally," said University of Arizona Foundation President and CEO John-Paul Roczniak. "Mel and Enid supported the university to make public health accessible. The Zuckerman Family Foundation has supported health equity programs and helped the college adapt to state needs."
"Mel's kindness, generosity, and support of the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health have always inspired me and everyone in our college," said dean Iman Hakim. "His concern for our success and well-being drives me every day." His passion and generosity have improved our college. Mel was kind and compassionate. They encouraged and supported us throughout our college's growth, along with his wife, Enid. "We are grateful for his time and humbled by his legacy."
In 1958, the Zuckermans moved to Tucson from New Jersey and built and developed real estate. Mel's "aha!" moment came 10 years after his doctor told him he had the health risks of a 65-year-old man at 40.
Mel's lifelong smoker father had lung cancer.
"I watched my father hang his head in his hands and say over and over, 'if only I had listened to my doctors, and "If only I had done this or that.'" Mel wrote Canyon Ranch origins. "It was a true wake-up call for me," Mel wrote. His father died six months later.
In Ojai, California, Mel had a life-changing spa experience.
"Enid had been devoted to healthy living for a long time, and she'd suggested some years before that maybe we ought to build a 'fat farm,' that there were a lot of them springing up, and that Tucson would be a good place for one," Mel wrote. "I rolled my eyes and built houses. I thought of Canyon Ranch after her suggestion in California."
The Zuckermans bought Double U Ranch in Tucson to achieve their new goal, and Canyon Ranch opened 20 months later, in 1979.
"We built it as a place where we could live the healthy lives we wanted, and where we could share what we'd found with anyone who cared to come," Mel wrote.
Canyon Ranch expanded the concept of a health resort by hiring board-certified physicians, registered dietitians, exercise physiologists, licensed therapists, and other professionals. The brand runs many US wellness centers. Canyon Ranch sold in 2017.
Mel and Enid helped the University of Arizona in small steps, starting with the physiology and nutritional sciences departments and ending with the endowment that created the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. Mel also volunteered on the University of Arizona Foundation Board of Trustees and the Zuckerman College of Public Health Community Advisory Board. In 1998, the Tucson College of Medicine awarded him an honorary degree.
Mel is survived by his wife, Enid; his two children, Amy and Jay (Stephanie); his grandchildren, Nicole (Ken), Talia, Colton, and Riley; his two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Asher; his sister and brother-in-law, Paula and Arthur Molk; many nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Our founder, Melvin "Mel" Zuckerman, died peacefully at 94. Mel was a caring father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, and friend. He founded Canyon Ranch in 1978 to help people live younger, longer. Mel's pioneering wellness resort used western and eastern holistic methods, treatments, and evidence to address mind, body, and spirit well-being. Mel's legacy expanded Canyon Ranch into new properties and successful ventures and changed many lives. All miss him.

Award harmony, light, and everlasting youth to him who has been taken from us while still a kid. May he always be aware of the tinge of your affection and the gleam of your light in your vast domain. Look delicately upon his family, whose hearts are overburdened with distress. Stroll with them; console them; encompass them with heavenly messengers to lift them from the profundity of their grievous misfortune. At long last, look generously upon our Focal Catholic People group. We stand as a family in our moments of triumph and bliss; give us the mental strength to remain as a family now, despite our lack of Mel zuckerman. May we console each other with expressions of confidence, trust, and love. Persuade our hearts that everything works for the good of those who trust in God. So be it.
Who isMel zuckerman?
Today, many people are experiencing heavy hearts as a result of the news that Mel Zuckerman, the founder of Canyon Ranch, has passed away. My heart is filled with more joy than sorrow because I am aware of how fleeting life is and because I believe that anyone whose life has been meaningful enough to accomplish what he has has had a life well lived.
When I say meaningful, I mean that it has had such a significant impact that it has altered the lives of a large number of people, including myself, and I am one of the people whose lives it has improved.
When I started working at CR thirty years ago, I had no idea that I would still be there after all this time. However, the positive impact that CR has had on my health is incalculable. Being a part of a team that has helped improve the lives of others is extremely rewarding, and the relationships I've formed with other members will last a lifetime.
Mel, I am grateful to you for having a vision and taking action on it. First of all, I want to thank you for your kind words of encouragement, but more importantly, I want to thank you for entrusting me and others to carry out your vision. It has been an absolute privilege to be of service to you, the staff of CR, as well as our guests who place their trust in us for their health and wellbeing.
