Korey Wise, exonerated in Central Park jogger case, named grand marshal for IBE parade
The Circle City Classic Parade begins on North and Pennsylvania streets on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 10:30 a.m.
INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Indiana Black Expo, Inc. has named Korey Wise the grand marshal of this year's Circle City Classic Parade.
Wise, now 47, was the eldest of the Central Park Five who were wrongfully accused in 1989 of the rape and assault of a 28-year-old white woman who was jogging in Central Park.
The eventual acquitted Wise, Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Raymond Santana and Yusef Salaam spent between six and 13 years in prison.
Wise was the only one to be tried as an adult and spent the most time in prison.
The Central Park Five were exonerated in 2002 after Matias Reyes admitting to raping and assaulting the female jogger, which DNA tests confirmed.
Wise is now a criminal justice reform advocate and public speaker.
Netflix released a four-episode miniseries in May, titled "When They See Us," which was met with much critical acclaim.
Actor Jharrel Jerome, who played Wise in the miniseries, won an Emmy on Sept. 22 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.
