Having won the Sydney International tournament she competed in this year, Paula Badosa grabbed the attention of many with her sharp and quick game to the point where she was picked as a potential candidate to win the Indian Wells and possibly a grand slam this year. Her highest round after that was in the Australian Open where she made it past the third round but lost to Madison Keys ( 6-3, 6-1 ) in the fourth. She couldn’t pick up her hame until the Paribas Open, defeating Sara Sorribes Tormo in the third round ( 7-6, 6-1 ) and eighteenth seed Leylah Fernandez ( 6-4, 6-4 ) in the fourth round in straight sets.

Veronika Kudermetova although hasn’t won any titles this year, she reached the finals of the Melbourne Summer series 1 and the Dubai tennis championship where she faced Ostapenko but lost in straight sets ( 6-0, 6-4 ). She also made it to the third round in the Australian Open in which she lost to Maria Sakkari ( 4-6, 6-1 ). In the Indian Wells, she faced Marie bouzková in the third round and moved on to the next round due to a walkover. In the fourth round, she defeated Markéta Vondroušová after a tough three-setter (7-6, 6-7, 7-5 ).
