Ideas for "re-numbered" steam excusions - Trains Magazine
Captain - Please do not take my post as being "defensive". In any forum where only text is conveyed, and not genuflection or emotion... its hard to tell what real emotion is behind the text. My appologies.
Being that ANYTHING Pere Marquette is my favorite, i do take offense to such projects. Especially in the area of 1225. Shes been through enough already! Also, Im the only one in this thread that seems to be against such acts as "renumbering" or "relettering". So I took it upon myself to speak a little louder so i can be heard above the majority. That was not anger, but a very strong protest.
Im old fashioned. I, like others, prefer to keep some things in original form. Thus why the 'heritage diesels' make no sense to me. Id rather see a GG1 restored in Pennsy striping, than a modern safety cab repainted (which are hideous looking things anyways). If you were faced with the same question, who wouldnt want that?
Ofcourse its cheaper to repaint than restore. Thats a given, and agree 100%. But if your in that industry anyway.... you better have money to begin with! It just rubs against the grain to see 765, or 1225, or any other loco that has earned its place in this world, treated in such a manner. As if it was a billboard or something, changing display at the whim of a humans will.
To me, the best example i can think of would be taking a US Sherman tank, and painting it to resemble a Nazi Tiger tank, just because someone was too lazy to restore a real Tiger. Think of how a WWII vet would feel about that, and thats how "I" feel about repainting locos. Very adament!
Again, my apologies for sounding brash, but I am dead set AGAINST it. And would stop it from ever happening if i could.
HegeWisch - your right, I would oppose Doyle on his plans. But as said above.... nothing i can do to stop it. Except voice "my opinion".
If I could ever get the opportunity to meet Doyle, I would certainly mention it to him. Pretty sure he wouldnt even flinch. Rightfully so, they are "his" locos, not mine. On the flip side of that, I do not have to look at them, nor ride behind them. Id be all over 4449 though. I wouldnt condem Doyle for it. But i would not praise him for it either!
I can garauntee, I wouldnt be the first railfan he has had to deal with. Doyle is an old railroader..... he has a thick hide.
