French Open 2021: Day 4- Sabalenka, Williams and Azarenka march forward, Bencic bows out
The Day 4 of the 2021 French Open marked the beginning of the second round matches. Most of the top seeds from the bottom half were able to make it to the next round, including Serena Williams, Aryna Sabalenka and former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka but the day also saw Swiss 10th seed Belinda Bencic getting knocked out in the early stage yet again.
Azarenka puts on a show against Tauson
Former semi finalist, Victoria Azarenka advanced to the third round of the French Open after beating Danish teenager Clara Tauson with a 7-5,6-4 victory Court Simonne-Mathieu on Wednesday. is one of nine players over 30 years old to reach the second round, while Tauson is one of five teenagers in the field to make it that far. She will now face Madison Keys of the USA in the third round.
Williams survives Buzarnescu test
23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams survived a second round scare and eventually got the better of Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu in three sets in the second round of the 2021 French Open on Wednesday. She defeated the 33-year old with a scoreline of 6-3,5-7,6-1 on Chatrier. This was also her 363rd win at Grand Slams.
Sabalenka gets past countrywoman Sasnovich
Madrid Open Champion and third seed Aryna Sabalenka made it into the third round of the French Open for the second straight season after she defeated her countrywoman Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-5,6-3. She will now face 31st seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia in the third round.
Kasatkina upsets Bencic
It was the biggest upset of the day as 2018 quarterfinalist Daria Kasatkina of Russia defeated 10th seed Belinda Bencic in straight sets 6-2,6-2 to knock her out of the tournament. The Swiss player has never progressed past the third round at the French Open in five appearances. The Russian will now face Sorana Cirstea in the Round of 32.
