Ed Ames (birth name – Edmond Dantes Urick), nicknamed – The Boston Baritone, is an American singer and actor who sang in the single “My Cup Runneth Over.”

He was part of the singing group the Ames Brothers.

Biography

Ames was born on July 9, 1927, in Malden, Massachusetts, USA, to Jewish parents David Urick (Eurich) and Sarah (Zaslavskaya), who had emigrated from Ukraine.

He was the youngest of nine children, four girls and five boys.

Ed grew up in a poor household. He said about his childhood:

”When I was 10, half the time was spent in hospitals being treated for starvation and malnutrition.”

Ames went on to say:

”I had horrible skin eruptions all over my body and rickets where the bones had not been developed.”

Ed attended the Boston Latin School. There, he was educated in literature as well as Opera and Classical music.

During high school, Ed was part of a singing group with his siblings, called – ”The Ames Brothers.”

The group had their first major hit in the 1950s with the double-sided Rag Mop and Sentimental Me.

While still with the Ames Brothers, he recorded under the name “Eddie Ames.” In January 1957, Amos released the single “Bean Song (Which Way To Boston?).”

The Ames Brothers disbanded in 1960.

Later, he pursued a career in acting. Ed also attended the Herbert Berghoff School.

In 1953, Ames got his first starring role in an Off-Broadway production, called The Crucible.

The Rifleman

In 1962, he performed as a Mexican bandit on an episode of The Rifleman – a Western TV program that aired on ABC from September 30, 1958, to April 8, 1963. The television show was filmed in black and white, in half-hour episodes.

It was set in the 1870s and 1880s in the fictional town of North Fork, New Mexico Territory. Some of the stars were Johnny Crawford as Mark McCain as well as Chuck Connors as rancher Lucas McCain.

In 1963, he appeared as Kennedy in the episode “The Day of the Pawnees, Part 2” on The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters – an American western TV series that was produced by MGM Television and aired on ABC from 1963 to 1964.

In 1964, Ed played the Cherokee tribesman Mingo on the TV series Daniel Boone, with Veronica Cartwright, Darby Hinton, Patricia Blair, and Fess Parker.

In 1965, Ames released his first RCA Victor chart single, named – “Try to Remember.”

On April 27, 1965, he performed on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, an American talk show that aired on NBC from October 1, 1962, to May 22, 1992. It was hosted by Johnny Carson under the Tonight Show franchise. In 2002, the talk show was ranked No. 12 on TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.

In 1967, Ed sang the “Ballad of the War Wagon” in the John Wayne/Batjac Productions movie, The War Wagon.

Also in 1967, he released a single entitled – “My Cup Runneth Over.” Later that year, Ames released another single, called – “Who Will Answer?.”

Ed got married to Sara Cacheiro on July 17, 1947. The couple divorced in 1970.

In 1998, Ames married Jeanne Arnold.
