Driver commits suicide during traffic stop in Butte

During a traffic stop at around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, a 45-year-old man shot and killed himself in the 700 block of South Montana Street.

Butte police had stopped the vehicle to check on the man’s welfare following an incident earlier that evening.

According to Butte-Silver Bow Sheriff Ed Lester, the unidentified man used a firearm to kill himself as officers were trying to talk to him. No shots were fired by the officers and no officers were injured.

He was the only one in the vehicle.

Butte law enforcement has requested that the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation conduct an investigation into the incident.

“This is a tragic incident,” said the sheriff. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died.”
