Did You Forget '80s Sitcoms Out of This World and Small Wonder Existed? Let's Fix That Right Now, Shall We?
It's Friday so you know what that means, right? We gotta flashback to a TV show of our youth that I can almost guarantee you have not thought about in a long, long time. And a simpler time at that! We get our sci-fi and paranormal fixes today with over the top shows like True Blood, Grimm and Fringe to name a few--but do you remember when aliens and robots were part of our world in the form of teenage girls?
Seriously, do you remember Out of This World? I'll let you get reacquainted with the ridiculously catchy theme song and basic premise of the show with the openings from all four seasons of the sitcom right here:
Was I the only one who had a girl crush on Maureen Flannigan as half alien/half teen Evie Garland? Was I the only one that tried to stop time on the playground (or when I was about to get grounded) by tapping my pointer fingers together? I seriously wished I could talk to my dad via a cube--even though he was right there in the flesh with me! Outer space communication just looked like the coolest thing ever. Oh, and lets not forget Evie's HOT boyfriend Chris--played by a very young, very blonde Steve Burton AKA Jason Quartermaine on General Hospital!
Here's a clip from one of the very first episodes (sorry about the subtitles)!
Okay, so if you were into Out of This World, then you definitely were a fan of Small Wonder too, right? Remember V.I.C.I. ("Voice Input Child Identicant") but we just called her Vicki? She was the robot child that became a part of the Lawson family. Vicki could do cool things like run really fast and learn new information in record time--but poor Vici spoke in a monotone, took everything so literally and had to sleep in a cabinet in her "brother" Jaime's bedroom. You know, because she had to recharge every night. No one was allowed to know that Vicki was a robot so the Lawson's had to keep it a secret. Come to think of it--how come no one every wondered why Vicki wasn't aging?
