Dept. of Corrections employee struck, killed by Amtrak train – WSOC TV
SALISBURY, N.C. — Deputies in Rowan County told Channel 9 that someone was struck and killed by an Amtrak train early Friday morning.
Officials identified the person as David Parker, a Department of Corrections employee.
A witness said Parker stepped onto the tracks. Officials found his car nearby.
This marks the third fatal incident in Rowan County involving a pedestrian and a train in the month of July.
The number 19 Crescent train -- which was traveling from New York to New Orleans -- was cleared to leave the scene around 5:20 a.m. and arrived in Charlotte a short time later.
After some passengers got off the train, it departed for New Orleans around 6:15 a.m.
Amtrak officials said the train hit someone on Main Street about five miles south of Salisbury around 2 a.m.

None of the 252 people on board the train were hurt.

Witnesses told Channel 9 they could smell the train's brakes burning as the conductor tried to stop to avoid hitting the victim.
Investigators have not released the deceased’s name.
