80s Fashion Q&A with The Goldbergs Costume Designer, Keri Smith
Glamour: What has been your favorite look of Beverly's and Erica's so far on the show?
Keri: I love so many. I will be walking through the set and see Wendi sitting there reading in her Beverly costume and I will just giggle. For her, I really enjoy when she "means business." This is usually when she has a bone to pick and heads to the school to talk about one of here loved ones. Her teal leather jacket, pencil skirt combo was pretty memorable. Oh, and of course her jazzercise outfits. So fun. For Erica, she always rocks her super-high-waisted acid-wash jeans and a crop top. But I also really like when she has a special moment. For example, she gets all dolled up to go out to eat after a breakup and wears a tight pink leather strapless dress, with a matching crop jacket. Apparently, two-piece leather outfits are my thing.
I call this my Kelly Kapowski look. All I need is Mark-Paul Gosselaar on my arm, and I'm set for this year's Halloween costume.
Glamour: Of all the looks that you dressed me in, what was your favorite, and which one could actually be made relevant now?
Keri: Well, you looked great in all of them. Which is weird. [Laughs] I would say as far as the most relevant now, would clearly be the crop top and skater skirt outfit. I see so much of this in the stores now. But also, I can see celebs on the red carpet sporting the gold asymmetrical dress. George Clooney's wife would rock that too. And while we are at it, the hipsters of today are embracing the once "ugly sweater" a la the Cinderella-themed sweater. These theme sweaters and the like are all over the Internet like Etsy and in stores like Urban Outfitters. It makes me smile.
